Purina Dog Food Recall: The Real 2023 Vitamin D Recall, Not 2025

Searches for a Purina dog food recall in 2025 return a confusing mix of headlines, social media posts, and old news dressed up as new. Here is the fact that clears up most of the confusion: there was no Purina dog food recall in 2025, and no Purina recall appears in the FDA’s 2026 entries either. The real recent Purina recall happened in February 2023, with an expansion that followed, and it involved a single prescription-only product, not the Purina Pro Plan or Purina Dog Chow sold in ordinary stores.

This report explains what was actually recalled in 2023, why the 2025 searches exist, what the social media scare of early 2024 was and why the FDA and Purina both rejected it, and how to check any Purina product. If you feed Purina, the distinction between a prescription diet and a retail diet is the detail that matters most.

The Short Answer: One Prescription Product, Two Dogs, Both Recovered

The documented Purina recall, in brief:

  • February 8, 2023: Nestle Purina PetCare voluntarily recalled select lots of Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets EL Elemental dry dog food, a prescription-only formula, for potentially elevated levels of vitamin D. Two dogs showed signs of vitamin D toxicity after eating it. Both recovered. No other Purina products were included.
  • Expansion, 2023: Purina later recalled two more lots of the same EL Elemental formula after its investigation found a supplier error that affected only that specific formula.
  • 2024 rumour: In late 2023 and early 2024, social media posts claimed Purina foods were sickening hundreds of dogs. Purina investigated and said it found no issue, and the FDA confirmed it had no Purina recall in force. No recall followed.
  • 2025: No FDA recall for any Purina product has been recorded for 2025. Searches using that year are picking up the 2023 recall, the 2024 rumour, or both.

That is a short and narrow record for the largest pet food maker in the United States, and its narrowness is the point. The 2023 recall was real, but it was confined to one prescription formula sold through veterinary clinics, not to the retail bags most Purina owners buy.

The 2023 Recall: What EL Elemental Is, and Why It Matters

Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets EL Elemental is not an ordinary dog food. It is a prescription diet, an elemental formula made for dogs with severe food sensitivities, in which proteins are broken down into amino acids so that allergic dogs can tolerate them. It is distributed by prescription only, through veterinary clinics, Purina Vet Direct, Purina for Professionals, and other retailers able to validate a prescription. It is not sold on ordinary supermarket or pet store shelves.

On February 8, 2023, Purina recalled select lots of EL Elemental dry food after being informed of two confirmed cases of dogs exhibiting signs of vitamin D toxicity. The company said the recall was due to potentially elevated levels of vitamin D, and that the two affected dogs had recovered. The recall notice, posted by the FDA, covered only EL Elemental. It explicitly stated that no other Purina pet care products were included.

The investigation that followed found the cause in a supplier error. Purina said a production error from a United States supplier, made only for that specific formula, had resulted in potentially elevated vitamin D, and on that basis it expanded the recall to two more lots of EL Elemental. The expansion is important for owners of prescription diets: when a company expands a recall, it means the original lot list was incomplete, and anyone holding the product should re-check, not assume that a bag cleared in the first notice is cleared for good.

What Elevated Vitamin D Does to a Dog

Vitamin D is essential for dogs in the right amount, and dangerous in excess, because it controls calcium absorption. Too much vitamin D drives blood calcium too high, and high calcium damages the kidneys. Dogs with vitamin D toxicity may vomit, lose their appetite, drink and urinate more than usual, drool excessively, lose weight, and become lethargic. In severe cases, kidney failure can follow.

The two dogs in the 2023 Purina cases showed signs consistent with vitamin D toxicity, and both recovered once the food was stopped, which is the expected outcome when the cause is caught early. That is also why prescription-diet recalls, though narrow, are taken seriously: the dogs eating EL Elemental are often already ill, with food allergies or gut disease, and their owners and veterinarians need to know quickly whether a new symptom is the underlying illness or the food.

The vitamin D hazard is the same one behind the much larger Hill’s recall of 2019, in which a premix supplier error affected dozens of canned foods. The Purina and Hill’s episodes share a root cause type, a supplier premix error, but they differ enormously in scale: dozens of lots of one prescription formula at Purina, against 33 varieties and 86 lots at Hill’s. Scale matters when judging a brand’s record, and the Purina episode sits at the small end of that scale.

The 2024 Scare: Hundreds of Social Media Reports, No Recall

In November 2023, posts began circulating on social media, centred on a Facebook group, claiming that Purina Pro Plan and other Purina foods were making dogs sick, with reports numbering in the hundreds and including deaths. The claims spread quickly, amplified by short videos and reposts, and many owners understandably worried.

In January 2024, Purina issued a statement refuting the claims. The company said its quality assurance team had reviewed its foods, that there were no health or safety issues with any of its products, and that they could continue to be fed with confidence. It described the social media statements as false and said they were creating unnecessary stress for pet parents. The FDA, for its part, said it had no current recall for any Purina product, and that it evaluates illness reports to determine whether any action is warranted, without commenting on the specifics of those reports.

No recall followed the 2024 scare, and no FDA notice was ever issued for the products named in the posts. That outcome is worth recording, because it illustrates a pattern that now repeats with every major brand: a cluster of social media illness reports, a company denial, an FDA statement that no recall is in force, and then months of search results that blur the scare with a real, earlier recall. For Purina, the real earlier recall is February 2023, and the scare is January 2024. They are not the same event, and neither of them is a 2025 recall.

It is also worth being precise about what a denial does and does not prove. Purina’s statement and the absence of an FDA recall show that no regulatory action was taken. They do not prove that no individual dog ever became ill after eating Purina food, which would be an impossible claim for any food. What owners can fairly take from the episode is narrower: the specific claim that Purina foods were broadly unsafe in late 2023 and early 2024 was investigated by the company and not supported by a recall, and the FDA did not act on it.

Why “Purina Dog Food Recall 2025” Searches Mislead

Keyword searches for a 2025 Purina recall exist because search engines match words, not dates. An article about the 2023 recall, republished or updated in 2025, will rank for a 2025 query. A page about the 2024 social media scare, updated in 2025, will rank too. And low-quality pages have been known to invent a 2025 recall outright, describing lot codes and symptoms with no FDA notice behind them. One such page describes a supposed 2025 recall of a small-breed Purina product for Salmonella, with no corroborating FDA notice, and it should not be trusted.

The reliable test is the same for every brand: a real recall names a product, a lot code or date range, a hazard, and a date, and it appears as an FDA-posted company announcement. The 2023 EL Elemental recall passes that test. The supposed 2025 Purina recalls do not, because there is no FDA announcement to match them. When a search result cannot point to an FDA notice, treat it as a rumour, not a recall, however confident its headline sounds.

Purina’s Wider History, in One Paragraph

Purina’s longer history includes older episodes that sometimes surface in searches, including a 2016 recall of some Pro Plan wet foods for inconsistent nutrition found in the company’s own quality testing, and the Beneful lawsuits of 2015, in which owners alleged illness from that line. The Beneful litigation did not involve a recall, and it should not be described as one. The 2023 EL Elemental recall remains the most recent FDA-posted Purina dog food recall, and the only one in the last decade that is clearly documented as a recall rather than a lawsuit or a rumour.

How to Check Any Purina Product

Keep the bag until it is finished, so the product name, lot code, and best-by date are available. Compare all three against any recall notice, not just the brand name. For the 2023 recall, the product name mattered most: only Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets EL Elemental dry food was affected, and only select lots of it. A bag of Pro Plan Sensitive Skin and Stomach, Dog Chow, or Puppy Chow was never part of that recall, whatever the headline said.

If a product matches a recall, stop feeding it, follow the return or disposal instructions in the notice, and contact a veterinarian if the dog shows symptoms such as vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst or urination, or weight loss. Photographing the lot panel of each new bag turns a later news story into a thirty-second check. For prescription diets especially, where the dog is already under veterinary care, telling the veterinarian about a recall match promptly matters, because the vet can distinguish recall symptoms from the underlying condition.

The Bottom Line on Purina

There was no Purina dog food recall in 2025. The real recent recall was in February 2023, expanded later that year, and it covered select lots of one prescription-only food, Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets EL Elemental, for potentially elevated vitamin D, after two dogs showed toxicity signs and recovered. The social media scare of early 2024 produced no recall. Owners feeding ordinary retail Purina foods were never part of the 2023 recall, and owners holding EL Elemental from 2023 should check the lot lists. Everyone else can treat the 2025 headlines as what they are: old news, a debunked rumour, or both, wearing a new date.
