What is ich on a fish — fish with white spot disease

What Is Ich on a Fish? Symptoms, Treatment & Prevention

What is ich on a fish? If your fish looks like it’s been sprinkled with salt, you’re dealing with ich — the most common fish disease in the hobby. The good news: ich is highly treatable when caught early. The bad news: it kills fast when ignored. Here’s everything you need to know.

What Is Ich on a Fish?

Ich, short for Ichthyophthirius multifiliis, is a single-celled parasite that burrows into fish skin and gills. It’s present in most aquariums at low levels — healthy fish in good water fight it off. Outbreaks happen when fish are stressed: new arrivals, temperature swings, poor water quality, or bullying.

Symptoms: How to Spot Ich Early

White spots like grains of salt on body, fins, and gills — the hallmark sign. Flashing: fish rubbing against rocks or decorations. Clamped fins held tight. Rapid gill movement or gasping. Lethargy and appetite loss in advanced stages. Early ich looks like a light dusting — act at the first spots, not the fiftieth.

The Ich Life Cycle (Why Treatment Timing Matters)

Trophont (on the fish): the visible white spot — medications can’t reach it here. Tomont (in the substrate): the parasite drops off and divides into hundreds — also resistant. Theront (free-swimming): the offspring seeking a host — the ONLY stage medications kill. Treatment must continue 10–14 days to catch every hatching wave. Stopping when spots disappear is the classic mistake.

Treatment: The Heat Method (First Choice)

Raise the tank to 86°F (30°C) gradually, about 2°F per hour. Increase aeration — warm water holds less oxygen. Maintain 86°F for 14 days, even after spots vanish. Vacuum the substrate every few days. Lower temperature gradually afterward. Heat speeds the parasite’s life cycle so it hatches faster, then dies without finding hosts.

Treatment: Medication (When Heat Isn’t Enough)

For coldwater fish or severe infestations: malachite green + formalin combinations (follow dosing exactly), or copper-based treatments (remove shrimp and snails first). Aquarium salt at 1 tbsp per 5 gallons supports treatment. Remove activated carbon during medication.

What NOT to Do

Don’t stop treatment when spots disappear — continue the full 10–14 days. Don’t move sick fish to a hospital tank and leave the main tank untreated — parasites are in the substrate. Don’t add new fish during an outbreak.

Prevention

Quarantine new fish for 2–4 weeks — this single habit prevents most outbreaks. Avoid temperature swings. Maintain zero ammonia and zero nitrite. Don’t overcrowd.

Ich looks scary but it’s the most beatable disease in the hobby: heat, patience, and a full two-week course. Spot it early, treat the whole tank, and finish the treatment.
