Walking vs. Running: What Research Says About the Best Exercise

Fitness culture treats running as the serious exercise and walking as its lesser cousin. But a growing body of research suggests the gap is smaller than assumed, and for many people, walking might be the smarter choice.

The Calorie Question

Running burns roughly twice the calories per minute as brisk walking. But walking is sustainable for far longer, and consistency beats intensity over weeks and months. A daily hour-long walk you actually do outperforms a running program you abandon by February.

Joint Impact Matters

Running delivers two to three times your body weight in impact force with every stride. For healthy joints that is usually fine, but for anyone with knee, hip, or back issues, it can be a dealbreaker. Walking provides cardiovascular benefits with a fraction of the orthopedic stress.

The Mortality Data

Large studies find that regular brisk walking is associated with mortality reductions surprisingly close to those from running. The biggest health gains come from going from sedentary to active; the additional benefit of running over brisk walking exists but is modest.

The Verdict

If you love running, run. If you dread it, walk briskly and do not feel guilty. The best exercise is the one you will do consistently for decades. For most people, that is walking, and the science says that is more than enough.
